August 21:

  • Congratulations to Professor Polo Chau on his appointment as School of CSE associate chair! Professor Edmond Chow completed his associate chair term on July 31, and will teach at Georgia Tech-Europe during the 2026-2027 academic year. Thank you for your years of leadership, Edmond!
  • School of CSE Edenfield Early-Career Assistant Professor Anqi Wu received an NSF grant through the Mind, Machine and Motor Nexus (M3X) program. Together with several other labs, Wu’s group will advance human-humanoid interaction with focus on enabling humanoid robots to understand and respect human states and adapt their behavior accordingly.
  • School of CSE Ph.D. student Nand Chandravadia first-authored a paper published in Patterns on Aug. 14. Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Nabil Imam, Chandravadia showed that brain rhythms in the auditory system serve as inductive biases for speech recognition. The work is one of the first to connect brain oscillations to computational function. 
  • School of EAS/ECE/CSE joint Professor Felix Herrmann and his group presented nine papers at the sixth annual International Meeting for Applied Geoscience and Energy (IMAGE 2026), held Aug. 17-20 in Houston. Presenting authors included Ipsita Bhar, Ege Cirakman, Zijun Deng, Huseyin Tuna Erdinc, Abhinav Prakash Gahlot, Haoyun Li, Jayjay Park, Shiqin Zeng, and Yunlin Zeng.  
  • School of CSE ML Ph.D. student Matthew Hull first-authored a paper accepted for presentation at the 37th British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC 2026), occurring Nov. 23-26 in Lancaster, England. Advised by School of CSE Professor and Associate Chair Polo Chau, Hull led work on ComplicitSplat, an attack technique that hides viewpoint-specific camouflage inside a 3D scene.
  • School of CSE ML Ph.D. student Arnav Hiray first-authored a paper accepted for presentation at the Third Annual Conference on Language Modeling (COLM 2026), occurring Oct. 6-9 in San Francisco. Co-Advised by College of Computing Senior Associate Dean and School of Computational Science Regents’ Professor Srinivas Aluru and College of Business Professor Sudheer Chava, Hiray led work on CreditCardQA, the first financial literacy benchmark for numerical reasoning derived from real credit card agreements.
  • School of CSE CS Ph.D. student Yiqiao (Ahren) Jin co-authored a paper accepted for presentation at the 2026 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP 2026), occurring Oct. 24-29 in Budapest, Hungary. Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Srijan Kumar, Jin collaborated with IC Ph.D. student Yiyang (Diana) Wang, Associate Professor Josiah Hester, and MIT Assistant Professor Alex Cabral on MASCOT, a multi-agent framework for multi-perspective socio-collaborative companions.
  • School of CSE CS Ph.D. student Yiqiao (Ahren) Jin co-authored a paper accepted for presentation at the 2026 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (EMNLP 2026), occurring Oct. 24-29 in Budapest, Hungary. Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Srijan Kumar, Jin collaborated with several authors on CultureVLM, a series of VLMs fine-tuned on a dataset to achieve significant performance improvement in cultural understanding.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Qi Tang gave an invited talk on Aug. 13 at the SciML for Plasma Workshop at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tang discussed structure-preserving neural operators for convection-diffusion and kinetic plasma models. Ph.D. student Rushan Zhang gave a lightning talk on plasma control with particle in cell. 
  • School of AE/CSE joint Assistant Professor Elizabeth Qian presented progress on her Young Investigator Program (YIP) grant at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research Computational Mathematics Program Review, held Aug. 10-14 in Washington, D.C. Qian received the award to develop new algorithms for model reduction.
  • The Aerospace Computational Engineering (ACE) research group, led by School of AE/CSE joint Assistant Professor Elizabeth Qian, has a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) opening starting Fall 2026 (preferred) or Spring 2027. Eligibility is restricted to current or incoming Georgia Tech graduate students who are U.S. citizens. The successful candidate will contribute to ACE group research in computational inference and uncertainty quantification for engineering applications, including developing, implementing, and testing new algorithms. To be considered, email eqian@gatech.edu with a CV and unofficial transcripts from both GT and any prior institutions.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Qi Tang will host the next MFEM Community Workshop, occurring Sept. 22-25 at Georgia Tech. The first day of the workshop will be reserved for a free hands-on MFEM tutorial for interested students. Students are also welcome to present in a poster session and contributed talk sessions. This is a good opportunity to learn scalable finite elements, differentiable programming, GPU acceleration, preconditioning and iterative solvers, and many advanced features of high-performance computing. MFEM (https://github.com/mfem/mfem) is a free, open-source C++ library for finite element methods and the winner of 2025 ACM Gordon Bell Prize. The details of the registration information will be available soon. The workshop permits in-person and virtual participation, and registration is open until Sept. 11.
  • School of AE/CSE joint Assistant Professor Elizabeth Qian is co-sponsoring the workshop Frontiers of Uncertainty Quantification: Digital Twins and Model Reduction (FrontUQ 2026), occurring Dec. 1-4 at the Technical University of Munich in Garching, Germany. The workshop has an open call for paper and is currently accepting abstracts through the workshop website.
  • The Georgia Tech Open Source Program Office and IBM are hosting a hands-on workshop on building reliable agentic AI with open source tools on Aug. 27, 12:30 – 5:00 p.m. The workshop is open to Georgia Tech students, faculty, staff, and the Atlanta tech community. Lunch and coffee are provided. Space is limited and registration is required.

  • Congratulations to School of CSE Ph.D. candidate Michael Squires on his successful dissertation defense on July 20! Co-advised by Coulter BME Professor Peng Qiu and School of CSE J.Z. Liang Early-Career Associate Professor Xiuwei Zhang, Squires defended Modeling Single-Cell Data: Recursive Clustering for Resolving Cellular Heterogeneity in scRNA-seq and Label-Efficient Deep Learning for Subcellular Protein Localization in Fluorescence Microscopy.
  • Congratulations to School of CSE Ph.D. candidate Anand Radhakrishnan on his successful dissertation defense on July 30! Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson, Radhakrishnan defended Simulating Multi-Phase Compressible Flows: Introducing a Stochastic Sub-Grid Model for Dispersed Phase and Presenting a GPU Optimized Alternative to Traditional Shock Capturing via Information Geometric Regularization!
  • Congratulations to School of CSE Ph.D. student Tage Burnett on his selection to the GEM Fellowship Program! Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Qi Tang and nominated by Georgia Tech and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Burnett receives financial support and a summer work experience through the fellowship.
  • Congratulations to School of CSE Assistant Professor Peng Chen on his selection to work on two projects part of the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission! Chen will collaborate on two projects designed to improve prediction of water availability and flood risks. Chen’s work represents two of Georgia Tech’s seven projects Genesis awarded. Chen is one of five Georgia Tech faculty awarded funding and is the only researcher representing the College of Computing.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Qi Tang attended the 2026 ASCR Applied Math Principal Investigators Meeting on July 20-21 in Washington, D.C., and Rockville, Maryland. Tang presented a poster and one of the early career lightning talks on structure-preserving compression for particles. 
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Anqi Wu gave an invited talk at University College of London as part of its NeuroAI Talk series. Wu shared her group’s work on discovering task subspaces and their temporal expression in neural population activity.
  • School of CSE Ph.D. student Yuan Qiu first authored a paper published in the journal Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Peng Chen, the pair collaborated with University of South Carolina Professor Wolfgang Dahmen on research focusing on variationally correct operator learning.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Peng Chen co-authored a paper published in the journal Acta Materialia. Chen collaborated with alumnus Michael Buzzy (Ph.D. CSE-MSE 2025, M.S. CSE-MSE 2024), ME/MSE/CSE joint Regents’ Professor Surya Kalidindi, and Sandia National Laboratories Senior Technical Staff Member Andreas Robertson on PolyMicros, a foundation model for material science.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson spoke at the OLCF User Conference Call on July 24. Bryngelson discussed group work on computational fluid dynamics simulation at one quadrillion degrees of freedom, using unified memory and mixed-precision numerics to simulate compressible flow at 200 trillion grid points on OLCF Frontier.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson’s group wrote a paper published in the Journal of Fluid Dynamics. Group alumnus Haocheng Yu (Ph.D. AE-CSE 2026) and Postdoctoral Fellow Tianyi Chu led the work on energy dissipation in an acoustically-driven slit.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson co-authored a paper published in the International Journal of Aeroacoustics. Alumnus Haocheng Yu (Ph.D. AE-CSE 2026) led the work with Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering Regents’ Professors Krishan Ahuja and Lakshmi Sankar on sound leakage through ill-fitting ear plugs. 
  • School of CSE Ph.D. students Anand Radhakrishnan and Benjamin Wilfong first-authored a paper published in the journal Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson, the group collaborated with NYU Assistant Professor Florian Schäfer on the work about shocks without shock capturing.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson first-authored a paper published in the Journal of Computational Physics. Bryngelson collaborated with Iowa State University Distinguished Professor Emeritus Rodney Fox and Universite Paris-Saclay Research Fellow Frederique Laurent on fourth-order HyQMOM closures for 2D and 3D kinetic equations.
  • School of CSE Ph.D. candidate Anand Radhakrishnan first-authored a recent preprint. Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson, the group propose a sub-grid-scale model for polydisperse bubbly flows with heat and mass transfer at the bubble wall.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson and his group published a recent preprint. Postdoctoral Fellow Tianyi Chu led the work with CSE Ph.D. student Ben Wilfong and Sandia National Laboratory Researchers Tim Koehler and Ryan McMullen on coupled Rayleigh-Taylor and Faraday instabilities in vibrated cylinders and how confinement decides with mechanism wins.
  • School of CSE ML Ph.D. student Brook Eyob first-authored a recent preprint. Advised by NYU Assistant Professor Florian Schäfer, the group collaborated with School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson and Ph.D. student Jesus Arias on a discontinuous Galerkin discretization of information geometric regularization, stabilizing shocks without limiters or artificial viscosity.
  • School of AE/CSE joint Assistant Professor Elizabeth Qian co-authored a paper published in the Computational Science and Engineering. ML Ph.D. student Atticus Rex led the work with Air Force Research Lab Researcher David Peterson on MAGPI, a new multifidelity training approach for Gaussian process regression that uses low-fidelity data to define additional features that augment the input space of the learned model.
  • School of AE/CSE joint Assistant Professor Elizabeth Qian co-authored a paper published in the journal Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering. Fulbright visiting Ph.D. student Josie König led the work with Universitat Potsdam Professor Melina Freitag on dimension and model reduction approaches for linear Bayesian inverse problems with rank-deficient prior covariances.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory has opened registration and a call for participation to the 2026 New York Scientific Data Summit (NYSDS), occurring Sept. 28-29 at the SUNY Global Center in New York City. This year’s theme is Transformational AI from Science to Society, with main tracks focusing on AI for Science, AI for Energy, AI for Risk Assessment, AI for Education, and Robotics and Embodied AI. The deadline for abstract submissions is Aug. 15 and general registration closes on Sept. 20.

  • Congratulations to CSE Ph.D. candidate Haocheng Yu on his successful dissertation defense on July 1! Co-advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson and School of AE Regents’ Professor Krishan Ahuja, Yu defended Impact of Leakage Due to Ill-Fitting Earplugs on the Dissipation of High-Amplitude Sound into Vorticity.
  • Congratulations to School of CSE Assistant Professor Helen Xu for receiving the NSF CAREER Award! Xu will use the award to develop faster, more efficient data-management systems that support modern databases, AI applications, and other data-intensive computing.
  • Georgia Tech Research and the Institute for Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Society wrote a story on School of CSE Assistant Professor Nabil Imam and research he led published in Science Advances. The paper and story discuss brain evolution and design of more efficient AI systems by looking at the limbic system and neocortex. 
  • School of CSE faculty and students participated at the 2026 SIAM Annual Meeting (AN26), held July 6-10 in Cleveland. Assistant Professor Elizabeth Qian served on the organizing committee as a representative from the SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering. Assistant Professor Peng Chen and his Ph.D. students Wenbo Hao and Yuan Qiu presented two papers. Assistant Professor Qi Tang and Ph.D. student Tage Burnett presented a paper. School of CSE Professor and Associate Chair Edmond Chow servs as SIAM’s Vice President of Programs.
  • School of CSE Ph.D. students Bethany Barnwell, Afrouz Delshad, and Cole Welch gave talks at the SIAM Conference on the Life Sciences (LS26), held July 6-9 in Cleveland. All advised by College of Computing Associate Dean for Graduate Education and School of CSE Professor Elizabeth Cherry, Barnwell presented Predicting Conduction Velocity from Cardiac Ionic Models Using Machine Learning, Delshad presented Deep Echo State Networks Improve Cardiac Voltage Time Series Prediction, and Welch presented Learning Cardiac Action Potential Equations in the Presence of Unobserved Variables.
  • School of CSE faculty and students presented research at the 43rd International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2026), held July 6-11 in Seoul, South Korea. Of the 18 College of Computing faculty presenting at the conference, Assistant Professors Bo Dai, Kai Wang, Anqi Wu, Edenfield Early-Career Associate Professor Chao Zhang, and Professor and Associate Chair for Academic Affairs B. Aditya Prakash represented CSE. They and their students presented eight total papers, including Georgia Tech’s only oral paper from Wu’s group.   • School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson and his group participated at the 20th U.S. National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (USNC-TAM 2026), held June 21-25 in Pasadena, California. Bryngelson co-organized two mini-symposia on cavitation and bubble dynamics and on shock-laden flows. Ph.D. students Anand Radhakrishnan and Ben Wilfong gave a talk on extreme-scale spacecraft simulation. Postdoctoral Fellow Tianyi Chu gave a talk on constitutive evolution in laser-induced cavitation.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson co-authored a paper published in Communications Physics. Bryngelson collaborated with alumnus Zhixin (Jack) Song (Ph.D. PHYS 2026), undergraduate student Melody Lee, GTRI Research Scientist Bryan Gard, UC Berkeley Ph.D. student Hang Ren, and Nicolas Renaud from the Netherlands eScience Center and Quantum Application Lab on the work on Hadamard random forests, which reconstruct real-valued quantum state with exponentially fewer measurement settings. 
  • School of CSE alumnus Ziqi Zhang (CSE-CSE Ph.D. 2025) first authored a paper published in the journal Bioinformatics. Advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Xiuwei Zhang, the pair partnered with alumnus Jongseok Han (M.S. CSE 2022) and MBZUAI Professor Le Song on CeSpGRN, a method that infers cell-specific GRNs from scRNA-seq, paired scRNA-seq and scATAC-seq, or spatial transcriptomic data.
  • School of CSE Assistant Professor Spencer Bryngelson launched ANEForge, a project to program the Apple Neural Engine without CoreML. Code on Github, it includes a reverse-engineered guide to the engine’s datapath, compiler, program format, weight compression, kernel drive, and firmware, along with an open Python package and paper that run inference and training on the engine directly.
  • The Center for Scientific Software Engineering at Georgia Tech (CSSE@GT) is offering engagement opportunities for principal investigators who wish to take their research software prototypes and transition them into production-quality, open-source research products. This expression of interest proposal process is our invitation to work with the CSSE team to create long-lasting and impactful software products, along with longer-term collaborations between you and your team. This expression of interest opportunity is currently scoped to full-time Georgia Tech and staff and is focused on supporting research software.
